Makaton is a communication system consisting of signs and symbols derived from British sign language.

The Makaton choir was established in October 2006 following staff awareness training in Makaton sign language. A meeting was held to give attenders the opportunity to decide if they wished to become involved in forming a Makaton choir. Twenty four attenders showed an interest and they became immediately involved in planning days and times the group would meet, designing a polo shirt with the choir's logo and devising and agreeing group objectives.

The choir succeeded everyone's expectations and have truly grown from strength to strength.

In December 2008, the choir performed in the Culloden Hotel at the 'Mencap Rocks' Christmas concert. The choir opened the show and met John Daly who was a truly amazing host. Memories were made which will last a lifetime!!

From then on, the Makaton Choir has performed at the centre during our annual shows.  They continued to perform in the town at ASDA or our local bank at Christmas time and during fund raising events held at the centre.  They also had the pleasure of performing at Kilkeel Presbyterian Church every December for the congregation where we would have received generous donations from all involved.

Unfortunately due to the Covid-19 pandemic these last two years,  the Makaton Choir have been unable to perform.

Mourne Stimulus are hoping to return to full capacity in the very near future and when this happens we hope to resume our performances for all to see, so watch this space!
